What Is Via Negativa? Taleb's Subtraction Principle

Via negativa (the "negative way") is achieving outcomes through subtraction and removal rather than addition and creation. Defining things by what they are not rather than what they are.

"This is a healthy diet" is positive prescription. "This is an unhealthy diet because it contains X" is via negativa.

Why Subtraction Is More Robust

In complex systems, knowing what's harmful is more reliable than knowing what's beneficial.

You can confidently say "smoking kills you." You cannot confidently prescribe "this supplement extends your life" — the evidence is always weaker.

Applied to health: removing smoking, excess alcohol, refined sugar, and processed food accomplishes far more than adding supplements, protocols, and optimization.

Practical Application

Investing: Remove overleverage, concentrated positions, assets you don't understand. What remains is antifragile. Adding "clever" strategies rarely helps.

Diet: Remove seed oils, refined sugar, processed foods. What remains is healthy, without needing to add special foods.

Work: Remove meetings without clear purpose, projects that don't matter, clients who demand unreasonable things. What remains is more productive.

Happiness: Remove things that cause constant friction (bad relationships, bad commutes, wrong career). Adding "happiness techniques" works less well.

The Charlatan Test

Charlatans give positive prescriptions. Experts give via negativa advice.

"Do this ten-step system" is suspicious. "Stop doing these things that kill you" has credibility.
